Location
The Island of Mljet is situated in the vicinity of the romantic city of Dubrovnik, it forms a group of south Dalmatian Islands. Mljet Island is covered with luxuriant vegetation, nursing the most valuable gift of Mother Nature; Malo and Veliko Jezero. As such it has always been a desirable destination for demanding tourists, fans of nature holiday and wanderers on the track of legends about Odysseus and St. Paul.
Harbour of Polace along with Pomena, are important nautical locations, enriching it`s maritime role with late antique fortified summer-house from the 5-th century. It is believed that it was raised by the Goth Duke admiral Pierus. Located near the lakes, a natural phenomenon is preserved by the highest form of protection due to its exceptional floral, geological, historical, scenery and cultural value. Especially attractive is the island of St. Mary on the Veliko Jezero, along with its ancient Benedictine monastery dating from 12th century. Unesco added it onto the register of world`s heritage sites. Hiking and biking paths spread through the entire territory of Island of Mljet, along the shores of Malo and Veliko Jezero, over the hills which proudly carry their Roman fortifications, cliffs and rocky shores exposed to high seas, through rich forests of Aleppo pine and evergreen oaks.
