Nature and Climate of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a city to which the Mediterranean climate gave an exceptional natural diversity and a pleasant climate. Dubrovnik residents can enjoy the fruits of thick vegetation which is widespread on the entire south coast throughout the year. Here you can find lemons, oranges, tangerines, fields of medicinal Mediterranean herbs, rosemary, laurel...Of course, there are the most recognisable representatives of Dalmatian landscape – the obligatory vineyards and olive groves, as well as numerous exotic herbs such as aloes, palms and cactuses...Different flowers such as hydrangea, degenia and rhododendron also contribute to the botanical diversity and richness.

The characteristics of exceptional vegetation and climate, which is suitable for growing of herbs, were recognised by old civilisations whose primary interest was fruit growing, grape growing, olive growing, and vegetable growing...

The wooded island of Lokrum is located opposite the old city, and is a place of exceptional natural beauty and value, which, during the time of Dubrovnik Republic, became a Benedictine monastery centre, a place of peace and quiet, park, greenhouse, botanical garden and reservation of rare and protected plants. Its beauty and peace was preserved by priests and monks, who dedicated themselves with love to preservation and development of island scenery. During the later years, Lokrum received the status of a special forest vegetation reservation.

Nearly perfect weather conditions, over 250 sunny days per year, warm sea, and rich and mild atmosphere not only benefited the growth and development of exotic plants, but it has become a haven for all those searching for a healthy way of life, a breath of fresh air and the smell of true Mediterranean.
