Events in Dubrovnik
It is well known that Dubrovnik is a city of culture, art and music, and this in itself makes it a recognisable place of different events throughout the year. Dubrovnik Summer Festival is a world famous event with a 60-year tradition. This music and drama event is held in July and August on around 30 open air stages in palaces, churches, monasteries, forts...The event features local and world famous theatre names, who are glad to come and climb the historical theatre stages in Dubrovnik. Besides the Summer Festival, Dubrovnik offers a wide variety of different cultural events throughout the year – classical and jazz concerts, opera, ballets, and drama and folklore performances.
The Libertas Film Festival is a film event which has a rich programme and an interesting list of guests. It grows from year to year, building its recognisability on the global film festival map. During the Libertas Film Festival, the films are shown at two city cinemas, Sloboda and Jadran, the city theatre Marin Držić and summer cinema at the Revelin fort.
Open for each of its visitors, Dubrovnik shows its remarkable historical face throughout the year, so it is no wonder that it is called a museum city. A very valuable collection of golden relics of Dubrovnik goldsmiths from the end of 11th and the beginning of 12th century is located in the baroque Assumption of Mary Church. There is also the Duke's Palace, which is located on Stradun and is not only a cultural heritage of the city, but also a historical museum with exhibits from the era of Dubrovnik Republic. Julian Rachlin and Friends Festival is another music event which is held every year at the Palace atrium. The Gothic Renaissance palace Sponza is where the oldest personal identification, from 1022, is kept. Only a few metres away, within the Little Brothers monastery, there is one of the oldest pharmacies in these parts, and it has been operating since 1317.
The famous city programme during winter months starts with the St. Nicholas holiday. At the beginning of February, there is a celebration of the city patron, St. Blaise. During the celebration, there is a procession at which the relics of saints made during the golden era of Dubrovnik Republic are transferred.
