Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a unique treasury of cultural, historical and artistic treasures which had been writing a story in stone for centuries – the eternal symbol of durability and preservation. Dubrovnik history is carved out in walls, cleavers, squares, fountains and ports, monasteries, and churches, and today it testifies about the turbulent past of Dubrovnik people and it offers its visitors a unique combination of Mediterranean climate and centuries-old heritage.
Dubrovnik has always attracted free-minded people, tradesmen, artists, travellers with its inexhaustible energy, and in return it offered unforgettable moments, sights and adventures.
Dubrovnik is a source of culture, art, music, science and the place of origin of Croatian language and literature. Many greats are from Dubrovnik. Ruder Bošković thrilled the scientific world with his innovativeness in the 18th century, and Ivan Gundulić and Marin Držić, famous Dubrovnik authors, captured a part of historical Dubrovnik in their works. Even today, their sharp social criticism is spoken of with great respect in modern literary circles.
Dubrovnik owes its name to the Slavs, who were thrilled with the thick growth of pine trees, cypresses, palms, orange trees, aromatic herbs, and especially oak. They decided to give this area the name Dub, which was Slavic for oak.
Dubrovnik has often been the target of bandits and powerful sea forces, who wanted to conquer the impossible – freedom. Its magnificent walls defended its citizens, freedom and independence, which is a recognisable symbol of the city even today.
Surrounded by walls, the old city of Dubrovnik was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, which confirmed once again the uniqueness, charm and warmth of the ancient Mediterranean city, which you simply must visit.
