From a wide range of events being held in the city of Dubrovnik, we single out the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, a world-known manifestation with a 60-year-old tradition. This music and stage event takes place in July and August at 30 or so stages all across the city. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival programme consists of music, stage and dance performances at inspirational city locations, such as the Sponza Palace’s Atrium, Duke’s Palace, the island of Lokrum and the Revelin Fort. The outdoor performances in a unique Dubrovnik ambiance are particularly appealing and definitely worth seeing.
As far as the events in Rijeka are concerned, the city is best-known for its carnival. According to the old folk saying, the carnival tradition dates back to the prehistoric period and it has kept the old customs which are carried onto the following generations. The indigenous inhabitants used to call the masked people "ugly masks" and they believed that by dancing and singing and being folly and cheerful they are chasing the evil spirits away and welcoming spring – the time when new life is born. Nowadays the masks are commonly known as "zvončari" (bell ringers) and the carnival lasts from the beginning of the year until the end of February.
